Going...Going...Gone
I posted the Harley on Craigslist 6 days ago. Did not see much interest in it for the first few days then as the weekend started I was swamped. I priced it pretty low so I could move it. Told everybody everything there was to know about it when we spoke. I hid nothing from them. Interestingly enough even with the bike priced easily a couple grand below what it was worth, I got calls from home mechanics that wanted to know exact maintenance details, what was done when, why something was or was not done. I get it, but it was a bit annoying as I stated in the ad it was a project bike. Some of these calls seemed to expect a mint condition bike for half the price of a mint condition bike. Very odd.
Hispanic fellow emailed me several times last night. I missed the messages as I was preoccupied. Sent him a reply in the morning when I woke up and saw his messages from Craigslist that I would call him on my way to work. Called him with no answer. 10 minutes from work he calls back. We talk for a few minutes, I give him the details and he is unphased. He is about 2.5 to 3 hours away. References the need to see when he can come up but adamant it be today. I tell him I will be working all day and will not be home until 6:30. He says he will get back in touch. Heard this from most callers. Not holding my breath.
Mid afternoon I get a text. He is getting ready to leave. I text him back that I can meet him at 6:30 and he says 'ok'. I ask if he is bringing a trailer. He responds 'yes'. I respond, 'Bring cash'. No reply. I go home and ensure I have the title, head off to the gym. Still no response. Figure he was caught off guard by the 'Bring cash' statement or something. Wouldn't be the first person that lived several hours away that said they were coming to look at it that never arrived.
I leave work a little early because I can't remember where I put the title. I get home and go through all the spots I would have put it. I find it where I wouldn't have left it. I rush off to the gym so I can get back in time to meet him. I am running a bit behind.
Get out of the gym at 6:35. Get home at 6:45. There he is patiently waiting. I am impressed. He looks the bike over with me, I point out the issues with the bike, show him the little details he may or may not want to know. Choke the carb and press start and it takes a few turns to finally start but once it does runs like a dream less the bit of smoke I told him about. Valve seals is what I assume, something we already discussed.
We stand there a few minutes while the bike warms up. It has not run since the day I put the ad up and video recorded the bike running for people to see. I point at it and tell him it has no insurance so if he brakes it he buys it. He hops on and runs it up and down the street a few times. He pulls back in right behind his trailer and pulls out a stack of bills. We count them up, write up a receipt, I sign the title over to him and help him loaded it up and he left.
It does not get any simpler than that.
